NASA Roman Space Telescope Could Reveal a Hidden Universe

NASA Roman Space Telescope is built to survey the universe on an enormous scale. Its wide-field observations will help astronomers investigate dark energy, dark matter, galaxies and planets beyond our solar system.\n\n## Why Roman matters\nMost of the universe remains mysterious. Roman will study galaxies, gravitational lensing and distant supernovae to test how cosmic structure and expansion changed over time.\n\n## Hubble-like detail across a wider view\nRoman is designed around wide-field observing. It can survey much larger areas while preserving fine astronomical detail, allowing researchers to build huge statistical samples and search for subtle cosmic patterns. Large surveys can also reveal unusual galaxies, transient events and gravitational lenses that researchers did not originally expect to find.\n\n## Searching for hidden planets\nRoman will search for exoplanets using gravitational microlensing. A planet around a foreground star can leave a brief signature in the magnified light of a more distant star. This technique can reveal worlds that are difficult to find using other methods, including planets far from their stars and potentially free-floating planets.\n\n## A new era of astronomical data\nRoman will create enormous datasets. Processing them will require automated pipelines, advanced statistics and machine-learning techniques. Modern astronomy is increasingly a computing challenge as well as an observing challenge.\n\n## Could Roman explain dark energy?\nRoman can make precise measurements of cosmic expansion and the growth of structure. Those observations could strengthen existing theories, expose inconsistencies or point toward new physics.\n\n## The bigger picture\nRoman is not a replacement for Hubble or the James Webb Space Telescope. The observatories have different strengths. Roman can discover and map huge populations of objects, while other telescopes can investigate selected targets in greater detail. Roman represents a shift from looking through a narrow cosmic window toward constructing a much larger map of the universe. Somewhere inside that map may be discoveries nobody has thought to search for yet.
